All Time (Personal) Whisky Ranking

Attached is my own personal take of which are my favourite whiskies, starting from 2nd October 2016. Messily and manually bubble sorted into five categories: omg, good, meh, why, and awful. Rank within each category is in order of preference.

  1. Karuizawa 1983 59.1% – a dream come true
  2. Laphroaig 1996 20y/o Masterpieces 50.6% – omg. flavour of the karuizawa 1983 (close) with the typical peaty laphroaig hit
  3. Ardbeg 2000 bottled 2016 cask 16016 – post
  4. Smooth Ambler Old Scout 10 Year Old (unknown batch) – post
  5. Overholt Rye 1909 – post

  12. Glenfarclas 2007 Marriage of Casks 9y/o – pretty good stuff
  13. Glenfarclas 10 – good!!
  14. Glenfarclas 21 – good!!!
  15. Arran 2007 Amarone Cask Finish (55%) – post
  16. Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year Old Family Reserve – post
  17. Four Roses Bourbon 40% – post
  18. Arran 10 Year Old (46%) – post
  19. Arran Founder’s Reserve (NAS, 43%) – post
  20. Makmyra Blombstertid – cherry wine finish. Very nice!
  21. 8 Year Old Very Old Fitzgerald – post
  22. Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 43% – flavour blend of the miyagikyo 45% and yoichi 45%. Better – perhaps it’s the miyagikyo shining through.
  23. Great King Street Blend 43%

  10. Scapa Single Malt – salty, like Talisker storm

Why bother?

  1. Ardbeg Perpetuum – in between the Uigeadial and Corryvreckan. It’s got the corryvreckan taste but shallow… doesn’t stay with you. Mouth feel just feels wrong.
  2. Ardbeg Dark Cove – no good. Confusing.
  3. Glenfarclas 15 – raw
  4. Glenfarclas 25 – raw again, much too hard
  5. Springbank 10 year old – post
  6. Signatory Vintage Clynelish 1998 (cask 7776+7777 bottle 654) – post
  7. Reference II – post
  8. Edradour Caledonian selection 12yo ncf
  9. Glenfiddich IPA experiment – don’t taste no hops…
  10. Glenfiddich Project XX – input from 20 blenders… you know what they say about too many cooks…
  11. Muirhead’s Blue Seal 40% – post
  12. Nikka Coffey Malt – forgettable
  13. Akashi Blended – for the oldest distillery to get a license in japan, it does pretty poor whisky

Awful – stay away like the plague

  1. Buffalo Trace 40% – post
  2. Paul John Single Cask 59.5% – Cask 1906 – raw. a long way to go
  3. Okayama single malt 40% – reminds me of diesel
  4. Makmyra Vinterdrom – rum finish. Very bad!
  5. Togouchi Blended 12 y/o – yuck, actually made me ill
